I first heard about First Slice when I was a nanny in graduate school for a family that lived in Lincoln Square. The idea was this: First Slice prepackages meals for families with minimal time and/or a lack of cooking skills. The family orders the meals from a menu produced with local foods, then picks up the week's meals on a designated day. Abandoned meals are then donated to homeless shelters to feed Chicago's hungry--not bad.
There are two locations: Ravenswood and Andersonville. I've visited both but today I'm up in Andersonville. Even though the meals and pies are not necessarily gluten-free, they always carry some sort of flourless treat. Today's goodie was a flourless peanut butter cookie. Simple: peanut butter, sugar, eggs, and baking soda.
As I dig in, the cookie crumbles in my fingers. However, as I work my way to the middle, the cookie is more stable and dense. The thick peanut butter taste is present and so is the grittiness of the sugar, but overall, it's a good treat if you're in the area and want a treat.
Employees are nice. Ambiance is simple. But it fulfilled my sweet tooth!
